The Village

The village Agios Ioannis is a small traditional village built on the slope of the hill "Katalimata," 500m above sea level, 18 kms away from Ierapetra. The village is located in the south east of Crete, surrounded by a rugged but beautiful landscape with an open view to the Libyan Sea.

On your way to the village you may enjoy an unlimited view of the settlement. The sight is an impressive one. The former inhabitants of Agios Ioannis have moved to the shore between Makri Gialos and Koutsouras, where the tourist and agricultural development (greenhouses) offer them a life the old village in the mountains could never provide. There are only a few remaining inhabitants and almost all of the houses have been abandoned. But fortunately a lot of houses have, and are being renovated (mostly as holiday homes) and the village has become a very special place to stay. The taverna on the square is a lovely place to sit down to have a traditional Greek meal accompanied by a fantastic view of the mountain slope and the sea.
